It was 100 years ago, that a group of Catholic gentlemen came together in the basement of Saint Augustine Church in South Glastonbury. On the night of April 24, 1924, they resolved to petition the Supreme Council of the Knights of Columbus for authorization to organize and maintain a Glastonbury Council.
On May 4, 1924 a charter was granted with 53 original members and they
began practicing the principles of the Order; Charity, Unity and Fraternity.
These principles guide the Council to this very day.
Annual dues in 1924 were $5.00, double compared to current dues when adjusted for inflation. A party was held with total costs of $5.50. Adjusted for inflation, that is about what the Council spends today for
similar events.
Support of the Catholic Church and its priests is the prime mission of the Order and the Council. The vision and determination of one parish priest, our founder Blessed Michael McGivney continues to inspire the Council today.
The first Council Chaplain, Father John A. Fleming labored zealously for
the material and spiritual advancement of both Glastonbury churches.
His tireless efforts to provide for the well-being of those committed to
his care were deeply appreciated by his devoted parishioners and the
Council. After his death in 1932, the Council was re-named in his honor.
The first Grand Knight of the Council, Frank Breen started a tradition of leadership that continues today. 70 gentlemen have carried that title and have fulfilled their duties with distinction:

Council members have served the Connecticut State Council as Committee and Program Chairman, District Wardens, District Deputies and District Masters. Two members, John C. McKeone Sr. and Gary P. McKeone served as State Deputy and one member, James T. Wilson is currently serving as State Warden.
Council members have served our country in every conflict since World War I as well as peacetime.
Council 2533 has served multiple parishes over the years in Glastonbury and East Hartford including Saint Paul, Saint Dunstan, Saint Augustine, Saint Christopher, Our Lady of Peace and Blessed Sacrament.
Since the beginning, the Council sponsored Church and community events that included Amateur Nights, Communion Breakfasts, Childrens Annual Outing, Daughters of Isabella, Bazaars, Strawberry Festivals, Card Tournaments, Retreat Movements, Womens Voting League and Benefits for St. Paul Building Fund, just to name a few.
Parish and community involvement continues to this day including the Connecticut March for Life and providing meals to the homeless. In addition, Council fundraising efforts currently supports three local food banks, the Little Sisters of the Poor, the Glastonbury Special Olympics and the Coats for Kids program for Glastonbury Social Services. The Council offers scholastic awards to member children and financial and emotional support to a seminarian every year.
Worldwide, the Knights of Columbus are defenders of the Catholic faith, from raising and donating millions of dollars in assistance to our brother Knights of Columbus in The Ukraine, to raising awareness of the persecution and extermination of Catholics in the Middle East, and to fighting for the rights of the unborn. The Knights are our voice to our government, and to leaders around the world to ensure that our beliefs and rights are protected.
More than just a Catholic mens club; the Council is a family organization. The Knights of Columbus and our Council provides a place where families can come together and strengthen our faith and help those in need in our parish and community.
